02 Borobudur Three hundred years before Angkor Wat, there was Borobudur. Borobudur ranks as one of three of the world's greatest Buddhist monuments along side Angkor and Pagan, was built by the Sailendra rulers of Java somewhere between the 8th and 9th centuries. Unlike the great pyramids of Egypt, Borobudur has no interior, as this stepped pyramid was built on and over a hill. Standing majestic over a plain, this magnificent structure is raised 29 metres above ground level, and provides the visitor with a whopping 150 square metres of visual feast containing six terraces of bas reliefs and another three stupa-lined terraces.
