01 Angkor covers an area of 200 square kilometers in north-western Cambodia and is situated in a large basin framed by the Tonle Sap (Great Lake) in the south and the Kulen hills in the north. Angkor was an ancient political centre of the Khmer empire, a civilisation renowned for its art and architecture as evidence in the fame Angkor temples built between the 9th and 15th centuries - the classic period of Khmer art.
